High resolution inkjet printers and CIJ continuous small character inkjet printers are two mainstream inline coding machines for packaging lines. Many manufacturers get confused when purchasing, and wrong selection may lead to blurry codes, unreadable QR codes and production downtime.
CIJ (Continuous Inkjet) printers work with recycled ink stream and electrostatic deflection. Unused ink drops are recycled back to the system. Its biggest advantage is flexible print distance: stable marking from 5 mm to 50 mm away from products. It works well on curved surfaces, bottles, pipes and irregular packages. CIJ supports ultra-high conveyor speed, widely used for beverage bottles, cosmetic tubes, cables. Solvent ink dries instantly and offers strong adhesion.
The downside is lower resolution with dot-matrix style. It is not ideal for fine QR codes, logos and tiny graphics. CIJ has complex ink circuits, pressure and recovery systems. It requires regular solvent refilling and pipeline cleaning. Long idle time easily causes nozzle blockage.
High resolution inkjet printers (TIJ / Piezo DOD) adopt drop-on-demand technology. Ink ejects only when printing, no ink recovery loop. Resolution reaches 300–600 DPI for sharp, print-like marks. It is perfect for scannable QR codes, traceability codes, barcodes and brand logos. Cartridge design requires no solvent, less odor and simple maintenance.
Limitations: strict print distance (2–10 mm). The code turns blurry if the distance is too large. It is not suitable for extremely fast production lines and uneven curved products. Standard water-based ink has weak adhesion on glossy PE and laminated films; special ink is required.
Quick Selection Tips
✅ Choose CIJ: high-speed lines, bottles, tubes, cables, 24h continuous running, only print date and batch numbers.
✅ Choose High Resolution Inkjet: clear QR codes, logo printing, carton / paper packaging, low maintenance, medium line speed, eco-friendly without solvent.
There is no absolute “better” one. The decision depends on your line speed, material and coding content.
